When is it time to hire a sales person?

Does anyone out there have a sales person ,besides themselves ,to go out after commercial work? My next question is when did you know you needed help? How do you pay them(base pay or salary)?

Jim, I have some ideas that I will use when I get to that stage. I think by default smaller companies like ours (under $1M in gross sales) the pay scale has to be commissioned. The first thing I would recommend to you is to fine tune your costs to determine your customer acquisition rates. I have been working on a scale of initial and repeat commissions. In other words, the account belongs to the salesperson. The more accounts he/she earns and retains, the more income they generate. I figure its best to pick up a part time person that is already in sales and is maybe looking for something for his/her days off. Gimme a call this week and I will give you some ideas from a system I have been working on.
