Looking to calculate the square footage of balusters so I know how much stain/paint is needed

ok so typical square footage is LXWXH right? so I have a 3 ft baluster that is 1" X 1" X 1" X 1"... so 36X1X1 = 36 convert to feet and its 3sq feet ... but its a 3 dimensional 4 sided object not counting the tops.. so do I multiply the 36 by 4 since there are 4 paintable surfaces? That would give me 144 sq inches or 12 sq feet.... Seems logical but can't see there being 12 feet in a single 1x1 baluster...just want to confirm..
