Chris, there are a couple of choices. If you don't mind me asking.. two questions.

    1. Are you also staining/sealing?
    2. Is there any finish on there now?

You could go a couple ways, so i would ask the same questions as Ken. Stripping or preping is huge. I Think it is to p's??

    Chris,

If you can post a picture, especially one that shows the worst of the wood siding, that would be helpful.

Unless the cedar is heavily covered in mold/mildew, a sodium percarbonate wood cleaner application, and a low pressure rinse should work fine. Finish off with a light acid wash, maybe 6 oz./gal. of citric or oxalic acid.

This will clean and brighten the cedar and is normal prep work for staining. If you are going to stain, work fast. It is getting very late in the season here in the Northeast.

Rick would you even venture a house stain this time of year? Its cutting close now.

Chris, the pricing is going to be on opposite ends of the galaxy for service so it is important to nail down what the customer wants to do. If its just cosmetic.. You could X-Jet on bleach and rinse from the ground. That might be $.25 per s/f. If its staining prep, you have to get a wood prep soap (either percarb or a sodium hydroxide based), wash every inch of wood to remove decayed fibers and mold residue, then pH balance with an acidic brightener. That could be $2.50 per s/f or more.

    Ken,

Agree on the time of year, it is getting cold. The biggest problem is wood drying out. We'll be finishing staining our last job this Monday or Tuesday, or whenever this "IDA" weather departs. But its an ipe' project, and the wood dries fast.

We have applied Ready Seal in the low to mid 40's to cedar decks, without problem. But we don't do homes, and penetration in some cedars/cuts in cold temps may be inhibited.

It certainly is cutting it close in our neck of the woods.
