What Changes Will You Be Making For The Up Coming Season?

Just wanted to get some conversation going about what everyone is doing for the 2015 season.....Or better yet, what changes will you be making?

Marketing? Equipment? Vehicle? Employees? Systems?

Right now we're in the middle of re-building our 14' trailer. Sandblast prime & paint or Rhino Line....not sure at this moment. Tank bands went to be powder coated Fri.

Looking for a van to rotate out one of our older ones, or maybe a pick up truck.

Going to ramp up the commercial end...would like to eventually phase out of residential. Pretty set on equipment so not much there. Would love to eventually add a flat bed truck of some sort though. Need to train a new guy as well as I lost a really good one at the end of the year.

Why are you moving away from Residential? Any particular reason?

Few reasons, bit mostly it's because I have been doing residential over 20 years and ready for a change, plus looking at the commercial accounts we do have, it's more profitable and less headaches and worry than the residential side. I'll still do rest for another year or two, but the goal is after 2016 to be done residential or only do the ones that are on regular maintenance.

So you're "Streamlining" to be more profitable? I totally agree. We did that a few years back with deck staining, it was just not profitable in our area compared to the other work we do so we cut it out and saw profits jump by focusing on what we're best at, and most profitable at.

We will be doing some Otha courses as well.. Thinking of getting into some university work as there is quite a bit of business out there. Also working on new roof cleaning and gutter cleaning techniques as osha has visited us for walking on roofs without harness etc.. This could really interfere with profits...any ideas? Looking forward to 2015. Wish you all the best. Stay safe

I'll be adding a new truck.....it's an 8' box truck with a single cab.
Truck.jpg

I'm doing the build out this weekend to be ready for Monday's job. A standard PU truck just isn't enough for all we do and after seeing a few pictures of Eric's rig (Liberty Soft Wash) I had a few more ideas.

I won't be using a "skid" at all. I'm going to devote one of the boxes to house my residential pumps as well as my commercial pump. I'll run it so that we can just hook a water line to the truck and be able to boost pressure or shoot a mix.

I'm also implementing a daily "Safety Log" which will need to be filled out completely for every job to get the bonus we will be paying out. This way everything will be documented. From the pre-job walk around to the hose coiling. I figure it will add 10 minutes to each job but will ensure accountability.

I'm currently interviewing for a new sales person and my goal is to go after more commercial accounts as well. Residential is great and I love the people we deal with but commercial accounts are just better all the way around.

Bob....no expert on OSHA here but.......I just had a visit from our work comp insurance company. They sent a rep to visit one of our jobs and just "watch us work". He started off with an interview then just told us to do what we do. He was really impressed when we were done (whew) but the talk we had at the end was about your dilemma.

He told me he know's all the in's and out's with OSHA since that is a large part of his job. He told me OSHA considers any time over 1/2 hour on the roof as a need to tie off.....no matter what the pitch. He said OSHA considers it more of a hazard to attempt to put together, then take apart, a fall restraint system if your time on the roof will be brief. Meaning that you will spend MORE time on the roof because of the restraint system.

I asked what I should say if ever visited by OSHA. He simply said "be square" don't be smart at all because these guys have a ton of power. Show them you are trying to be safe and keep a safe environment. Tell them it's your understanding that you should not tie off if your roof exposure time will be less than 20 minutes (yes, say 20 and not 30). But then he said to always end with "is there a better way we could do it?"

Like I said....no expert here but just had the conversation last Friday.

We will be adding a 2nd truck to the business, adding 2 more workers and a salesperson. Ramping up our cedar roof cleaning to cover the entire state of Michigan.

Adding a third truck to help service a larger area. Like Doug, I have been converting my business model over to more commercial work. In 2014 we did about a 50/50 split and hope that will continue if not go up. I am bringing on a second sales guy and a full time office person as well

Hey there Guy,
I am setting up a 12' Isuzu box truck this year for my first PW rig. Starting out I will be focusing on residential washing and roof cleaning. I also want to get a few certifications under my belt.

Lots of changes to wash faster.I bought a 17" box truck from Eric Seitz with PW at 8 gpm vs my 4gpm.Added a water tote and 125 gal leg tank for roof mix.Added roof cleaning and a 10 gpm udor unit with 300" of ag hose. For google exposure, started a google+ page. It has over 7500 views so far.Started networking with local softwashers. Upgraded a small add and changed business cards.Modified business name.

Pretty much all the above. My pressure washing business has been just an add on to my lawn care biz. This past November I was in a pretty vicious auto accident. To make a long story short.. lost everything but walked away (more like hobbled) with limbs intact! Due to some lingering ailments.. I've decided to make PW my focus this year. Completely new trailer rig, website has been redone, continuing SEO work, yards signs, signage on vehicle and trailer, 2 magazine ads, newspaper, T-shirts and whatever else I need to do to succeed!

My plan is to do at least 50k in sales this season and upgrade from my Gen III pump unit to a full scale truck unit similar to Eric's as well. If I reach my sales goal by July or August I will invest in another truck and start prepping for commercial business in 2016. I want to take more classes and attend events in Atlanta and Myrtle Beach again as well.

Most of our systems are in place after working out some bugs last year. We will be adding another employee and will be focusing on the niche wood restoration market this year. Another truck may also come into play later this year.
